How we calculate

The same method as the «Where is the spring?» tool

Sources: the NDVI greenness index from NASA MODIS (Terra and Aqua) and NOAA-20 imagery through the NASA GIBS service, and monthly images since 2002 for the comparison with past years; land cover from ESA WorldCover 2021 (CC BY 4.0); landmark names, reserve boundaries and roads from Desert Maps (maps_ksa@) and © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Where we mark spring, and the areas, are DataPulse calculations, not official figures.
