Establishments and business
How many establishments operate in Saudi Arabia, how many opened and closed in a year, and in which activity (General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), business demography 2024 (1445–1446 AH), 84 activities); new individual proprietorships by region up to 2023 (Ministry of Commerce); and establishments by activity and size class up to 2019. Each section carries its own date.

By section
For each activity: active, new and closed establishments in 2024, their rates as GASTAT published them, and the “net turnover” (new rate minus closure rate). The last column is our calculation: how many closed for every 100 new. The highest turnover (opening and closing together) is in “Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products”, and the activities where more closed than opened: Manufacture of beverages, Manufacture of leather and related products, Manufacture of fabricated metal products, Telecommunications, Other professional, scientific and technical activities.

- An entrepreneur choosing an activity: An activity where many open and many close has a high-turnover market: entry is easy and competition renews every year. An activity with a low closure rate is closer to stable, and entering it may be harder.
- A supplier: The number of active establishments in your customers’ activity describes the size of the possible customer base, and the new establishments each year describe possible new customers.
- A commercial property developer: Activities where new establishments outnumber closures add establishments that need premises; this describes the direction of the number of establishments, not demand for a particular site or rent.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- A survival rate cannot be calculated from this bulletin: knowing how many new establishments survived one or three years needs tracking the same establishments for years, and the bulletin covers one year (2024). So we show “closed per 100 new” as a description of one year, not a survival rate.
- No breakdown by region, city or establishment size in this bulletin; the figures are for Saudi Arabia.
- One year with no earlier series on our side, so no trend across years. Activities follow GASTAT’s ISIC classification, which does not exactly match the merchant categories of the central bank.
- It does not say why an establishment closed, its sales, or the chance of success of any particular establishment.

- An entrepreneur: A region with many new registrations has new competitors every year, and also active business movement; the figure describes the movement, not your chances.
- A supplier: New individual proprietorships in your region are possible customers for set-up and fit-out services; the region’s share of Saudi Arabia describes its relative size.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- Individual proprietorships only, not companies; registration does not mean the establishment started operating or survived.
- No breakdown by activity or city in this file.
- Our series stops at 2023: newer figures are on the National Data Portal and we have not pulled them yet, so these figures do not describe 2024 or 2025.

- An “establishment” here is a working site, not the business entity of the business demography above, so the two counts cannot be compared directly.

Business and consumer confidence
How establishments see their business now and in the coming months (business confidence index, a monthly survey of non-oil establishments), and how people see their situation and the economy (consumer confidence index, monthly values GASTAT publishes each quarter). Business confidence runs from 0 to 100, and above 50 means optimistic establishments outnumber pessimistic ones; consumer confidence is around 100, and above it means more optimism than pessimism.

- An establishment owner, or someone considering an activity: Your sector’s confidence compared with other sectors and with the same month a year earlier describes the mood of competitors and suppliers: whether they plan to expand or to be cautious. It is the establishments’ opinion, not their sales.
- A retailer or a consumer service provider: Consumer confidence describes people’s readiness to spend; read it with actual card spending on the spending page, since opinion may lead spending or differ from it.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- Both indicators come from sample surveys and measure opinions and expectations, not sales or profits. A change of one or two points in a month may come from the sample.
- Business confidence excludes oil activities and is not published by region or establishment size; consumer confidence is for Saudi Arabia only.
- We do not forecast the coming months from these indicators.

- Someone thinking of a small business: The operating surplus of revenue in your activity describes how much, on average, remains from each riyal of sales after expenses and wages; it is an average for all establishments in the activity, not what yours will make.
- A supplier, or a body that supports small businesses: The SME share of an activity’s revenue describes where these customers concentrate: an activity where their share is large is open to small players, and one where it is small is dominated by large ones.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- Annual figures for Saudi Arabia; no breakdown by region or city, and no count of establishments in each class in this bulletin.
- Revenue is nominal (before removing inflation), so part of its growth is price rises. Operating surplus is not net profit: it does not deduct depreciation, interest, zakat or taxes.
- From 2019 to 2024 by section only; the division detail is for 2024 alone in the open file.
