Tourism: hospitality, Umrah and Hajj
Occupancy of hotels and serviced apartments and their average daily rate by region, domestic Umrah performers by region of residence, and pilgrims each Hajj season, as the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) publishes them. Hospitality to Q3 2025 (Muharram – Rabi' al-Akhir 1447 AH), Umrah to Q4 2025 (Rabi' al-Akhir – Rajab 1447 AH), and Hajj to the 1447 AH season (2026).
Occupancy in Saudi Arabia since Q1 2023
Occupancy (% of available rooms) and the average daily rate per occupied room in riyals, each quarter, newest first; the chart(Arabic) shows the same values.

- A restaurant or café owner near hotels: Read occupancy as the number of possible guests around you, and see which quarters of the year accommodation fills up in your region.
- An operator of serviced apartments or a small hotel: Compare your occupancy and rate with the average of your region and type of facility.
- A supplier (laundry, food, transport): See where rooms are concentrated. Occupancy and rates are regional averages, not a description of a particular facility.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- The daily rate is the average actually paid per occupied room as GASTAT collects it from licensed facilities, and it depends on what was occupied; its sharp rise in the quarter with Hajj (Makkah and Madinah) is seasonal.
- A fault in the source, Q2 2025: the “all facilities” column by region in GASTAT’s table carries the hotel room count instead of the total, so we removed every “all facilities” figure that contradicts the sum of hotels and apartments (17 figures) and did not replace it. This is why we show hotels and apartments separately.
- The number of available rooms is published for Q2 2025, Q3 2025 only, and the number of facilities from Q4 2023.
Domestic Umrah performers by region of residence
The region here is the performer’s region of residence, not where the Umrah was performed. Monthly figures for Saudi Arabia are in the monthly chart(Arabic).

A jump in the source with no published explanation: the share of residents of Makkah Region among domestic Umrah performers was 75% in Q1 2024 and became 36% in Q4 2025, and the shares of other regions rose with it. The change is sharp and simultaneous in all regions from the start of 2025, so it is more likely a change in how the source records or classifies than a change in performers’ behaviour; GASTAT has not published an explanation. So do not compare a region’s share in 2025 with its share in 2024.
| Quarter | Domestic performers (million) | Performers from abroad (million) | Makkah Region share of domestic % |

| Q1 2024 | 5.68 | 5.89 | 75.2 |

Umrah performers from inside and outside Saudi Arabia since 1437 AH
We joined the Umrah bulletins GASTAT has published since 1437 AH (2015–2016) with its database into one series for Saudi Arabia. In 2025 (1446–1447 AH), 43.09 million performed Umrah: 25.06 million from inside Saudi Arabia and 18.03 million from abroad, and in Q1 2026 (Rajab – Shawwal 1447 AH) 15.23 million.

- A shop, lodging or transport business in Makkah and Madinah: See which months are crowded with performers and in which months those from abroad dominate. Domestic performers concentrate in Ramadan, while those from abroad spread across the year and are absent during the Hajj season. This describes what happened, not a forecast of the next season.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- The actual number of people: someone who performed Umrah in two months is counted in each month, and the annual total is the sum of the months as GASTAT’s own bulletins add it up. We do not know performers’ spending or length of stay here.
- The source changed: up to 1441 AH (2020) the figures come from the sample “Umrah survey” (estimates), and from 1442 AH from Ministry of Hajj and Umrah records. Do not read the difference between the two periods as growth or decline.
- Zeros in 1441–1442 AH are the suspension of Umrah during the COVID-19 pandemic, not missing data.
- Performers from abroad are not published for 1437 AH, nor for the month of Dhu al-Hijjah (the Hajj season); the cell is left blank and we do not estimate it.
- Months are Hijri up to 1442 AH and Gregorian after that, as published; we do not convert between them.

- Businesses serving the Hajj season (lodging, catering, transport): The number of pilgrims is almost fixed because it is set by permits and quotas, so it is not read as demand that widens or narrows; it gives the size of the season and its split between inside and abroad.
A description of what the figures say, not advice; the decision is yours.
- The 1445 AH season did not publish domestic pilgrims by nationality, and the 1447 AH season did not publish the sex breakdown of pilgrims from abroad by arrival port; we leave the cell blank and do not estimate it.
- We do not know any facility’s revenue or the occupancy of a particular hotel, occupancy by city within a region, the number of tourists (domestic and international) by region or their spending, or unlicensed lodging (such as daily rentals through apps). Hospitality is available to Q3 2025 and Umrah to Q1 2026 (by region to Q4 2025); we do not estimate later periods or forecast the next season.
