Tourism pulse in your region: hotel occupancy, room rates and Umrah performers
Each quarter: how many hotel and serviced-apartment rooms were occupied, the average price per night, and how many Umrah performers came from inside and outside Saudi Arabia, compared with the same quarter of the previous year.
In Saudi Arabia: hotel occupancy 49.1%, change from the same quarter last year +2.9 points. Average room rate per night SAR 341 (−3.6%).
In Riyadh: hotel occupancy 58.1%, change from the same quarter last year −0.9 points. Average room rate per night SAR 645 (−13.8%).
In Makkah: hotel occupancy 42.8%, change from the same quarter last year +4.0 points. Average room rate per night SAR 294 (+3.1%).
In Eastern Province: hotel occupancy 52.6%, change from the same quarter last year +1.0 points. Average room rate per night SAR 389 (−0.1%).
In Madinah: hotel occupancy 68.9%, change from the same quarter last year +8.3 points. Average room rate per night SAR 298 (−9.3%).
In Qassim: hotel occupancy 43.0%, change from the same quarter last year −0.3 points. Average room rate per night SAR 387 (−3.8%).
In Asir: hotel occupancy 54.1%, change from the same quarter last year +1.0 points. Average room rate per night SAR 440 (+8.1%).
In Tabuk: hotel occupancy 38.4%, change from the same quarter last year −9.3 points. Average room rate per night SAR 560 (+7.1%).
In Hail: hotel occupancy 32.3%, change from the same quarter last year −5.6 points. Average room rate per night SAR 326 (−5.5%).
In Jazan: hotel occupancy 41.3%, change from the same quarter last year −1.8 points. Average room rate per night SAR 259 (−7.4%).
In Najran: hotel occupancy 45.8%, change from the same quarter last year −1.4 points. Average room rate per night SAR 190 (−8.3%).
In Al-Baha: hotel occupancy 48.1%, change from the same quarter last year +1.3 points. Average room rate per night SAR 462 (+3.6%).
In Al-Jouf: hotel occupancy 41.0%, change from the same quarter last year +2.7 points. Average room rate per night SAR 271 (+7.9%).
In Northern Borders: hotel occupancy 49.6%, change from the same quarter last year +4.1 points. Average room rate per night SAR 193 (+2.8%).
What this means for your decision: occupancy rising with a stable or higher rate means stronger demand for accommodation in the region; occupancy rising while the rate falls may mean rooms were filled by cutting prices. The two figures together describe the region’s season, not a particular hotel.

Why we do not compare domestic Umrah performers with the previous year: their figures at the source jumped between 2024 and 2025 in a way that does not look like a real change: the share of residents of Makkah region among domestic performers was 72.7% in 2024 and became 40.5% in 2025, while the figures for the other regions multiplied several times, with no published explanation. We show the numbers as published and calculate no rate of change from them.
Source: GASTAT, Umrah statistics, up to Q4 2025 (Rabi' al-Akhir – Rajab 1447 AH). Axis: the Gregorian year, with the Hijri year on 1 January below it.
What this means for your decision: Ramadan and Hajj move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, so their weight shifts between quarters; compare a quarter with the same quarter and look at which Hijri months it covered (shown next to each quarter).
What we left out, and why
- Domestic Umrah performers by region, and their annual change: their distribution across regions changed sharply at the source between 2024 and 2025 (a level jump with no published explanation), so we show no annual comparison for them, by region or for Saudi Arabia.
- Monthly Umrah figures for months placed outside their quarter at the source (all regional tables in Q3 2025, and non-Saudis in Q2 2024): removed during cleaning; we use the published quarterly total.
- “All hospitality establishments” in Q2 2025: the source column carried the number of hotel rooms instead of the total of the two categories, so the inconsistent figures (17 figures) were removed without replacement. That is why we show hotels and serviced apartments separately, and no “all” figure.
Details are in the data dictionary (DATA_DICTIONARY.md, GASTAT data section: hospitality and Umrah).
How we calculate
- Occupancy: occupied rooms ÷ available rooms in the quarter, as published by GASTAT (we convert the ratio from 0–1 to %). Change = the quarter minus the same quarter of the previous year, in percentage points.
- Average rate: the average amount paid per occupied room-night in riyals, as published by GASTAT. Change = per cent from the same quarter of the previous year, before adjusting for inflation.
- Umrah performers: the published quarterly total for Saudi Arabia, domestic and international.
What the indicator does not measure
- It does not measure the revenue of any particular hotel or establishment, nor short-term rentals outside licensed establishments.
- Administrative region, not city: “Makkah” includes Jeddah and Taif.
- The average rate is not today’s booking price: it is the average actually paid in the quarter, and it depends on the mix of hotels occupied.
- Umrah performers are not all visitors: it excludes tourists not performing Umrah, and Hajj pilgrims (Hajj has its own data page).
- The Gregorian quarter does not match the Hijri seasons: quarter-to-quarter comparisons are affected by Ramadan and Hajj moving between quarters.
