Population Census 2022
The census is the denominator of every “per person” figure on the site, and the basis for linking spending cities to their administrative regions.
What we take
- Population by sex (male and female) and nationality (Saudi and non-Saudi) for Saudi Arabia, the regions, governorates and cities, from the public export of the “population by sex” table on the GASTAT website.
- Annual population estimates for the regions to 2022 and for Saudi Arabia to 2024 from the statistical database.
- A published link table between 60 cities in SAMA data and their census cities and governorates (data/census_city_map.csv).

Updates: at source and on our side
- The census is once (2022). Annual estimates are issued by GASTAT; our database collector checks them daily and pulls them if they change.
- Our latest pull of the census: 29 September 2026 (18 Rabi' al-Akhir 1448 AH).
Limits
- City boundaries in the census differ from the “city” in SAMA data (where the payment terminal is); that is why we publish the link table.
- The census at district level is not published for download.
- Spending per person in Makkah and Madinah includes visitors’ spending, so it looks higher than residents’ spending.
- Population changes after 2022; the annual regional estimates in the database stop at 2022.
